Study in Australia Packing List

Ready to start your new journey in Australia? I know exactly where you are right now. Packing is definitely the most annoying part of the journey and I’m pretty sure not everyone enjoys it. No worries! I’m here to help!! This is your ultimate packing list for preparing for your study in Australia!

Packing List Study in Australia: Carry-On

Important Document

Those are the important document that shouldn’t be missed. I usually put them all in one folder and keep them secure in my backpack.

  • Passport
  • A Few Passport Photos: Headshots that you use for your passport, just in case you drop your passport and need a replacement when you’re overseas
  • Diver Licence
  • Visa (Hardcopy and Digital): The check-in counter might ask you to present your visa before getting your boarding pass
  • Flight Ticket and Boarding Pass

Some documents are not compulsory to take with you, but I strongly suggest you bring them in your carry-on

  • Proof of Vaccination: Australian government no longer checks your proof of vaccination from 2022, but there are still some restrictions for the certain country to present their PCR result and proof of vaccination
  • eCOE: this is the confirmation of enrolment given by your educational institution
  • Health Cover Policy Certificate
  • Lease of your Accommodation
  • Prepaid Mobile SIM Card

Electronic Devices

Electronic devices with batteries are not allowed to be put in the check-in luggage due to safety concerns. They should all be in your carry-on.

  • Phone
  • Laptop
  • IPad
  • Camera
  • Video Game Devices
  • Headphones
  • Powerbank
  • Chargers: this is for you to charge when you’re using electronic devices at the airport

Others

Others things I will suggest bringing with you on the plane.

  • Light Jacket: It could be really cold on the plane, so I recommend everyone bring a light jacket to the plane with you
  • Motion Sickness Pills
  • Glasses: It is not recommended to wear contacts on the plane because it is extremely dry
  • Cash: You can transfer a bit of money from your country to the bank account in Australia, but I will still suggest you bring some cash for the first few days when you haven’t activated your bank account
  • Neck Pillow
  • Masks
  • Sanitiser

The tip for packing your clothes is to use vacuumed sealed bags to save some space in your luggage.

  • Pants
  • Shorts
  • Formal Suits or Dresses: you will encounter some times you have to wear business casual or formal
  • Bras and Undies
  • Jackets
  • Socks
  • Pyjamas
  • Shoes
  • Hair Ties & Accessories
  • Bags/Backpacks

If you want

Those are the things you can bring with you if you want, but you’ll still be able to buy them here in Australia

  • Stationary: you will still be able to buy some in Officeworks, and many schools here are trying to put everything online, so it might not be as necessary as it was before
  • Snacks you like
  • Sanitary pad or tampon
  • Masks

Others

  • Personal Medication
  • Skincare
  • makeups
  • Prescriptive Glasses
  • Contacts
  • Umbrella
  • External Hard Drive
  • Adaptors
  • Chargers
  • Cleaning Rags: for the first day you arrive in Australia, you might want to clean up your place before unpacking
  • Hair Curler or Straightener
  • Men’s Razors
  • Travel Toiletries Set: this is for the first few days you arrive when you have no time to buy shampoo and body wash

What Not to Bring to Australia

  • Bed Sheets: The sizes of the beds may differ in different countries, so there’s no need to bring your bed sheets from your country. Bed sheets are quite affordable at Target, Big W, and Kmart in Australia.
  • Home Appliances: Home appliances are heavy, and they take up your space in the luggage. Many international students will bring rice cookers in their luggage. That is unnecessary.
  • Weapons: Do not bring any weapons into Australia. This also includes pepper spray and butterfly knives.
  • Eggs: Eggs for human consumption are not allowed to bring in Australia unless accompanied by an import permit.
  • Food from Flight: If you can’t finish your food on the flight, please leave it on the plane. You can’t bring the food from your flight into Australia.
